AB By the end of April 93, 9,500 blood samples have been tested for HIV
antibodies by an ELISA test (Wellcome) in Vientiane. 20 were found to be
positive, of which 18 were confirmed by a Western Blot test (Biorad)
(0.19%): 13 women (aged 15 to 29) and 5 men (aged 21 to 39). One patient
died of AIDS at the end of 1992. TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME. This
results show that HIV infection remains rare in the Lao PDR. 11 of the
18 HIV positive are sex workers. The opening of Lao PDR (Bridge on
Mekong) and the very alarming situation in Thailand and Burma has made
us very aware that we will face a similar situation in the next future.
Lao PDR is 80% mountainous, with a low density of population (17/km2)
mostly rural, protected from HIV infection until now.
